In the present, it’s largely accepted that sports serve the masses for entertainment purposes, whether it be going to a game or watching it with friends and family on the television. However, there is one thing in common, that is it always seems to attract groups of people who share common interests in the sport or the culture that surrounds it. This shared interests creates a sense of community that transcends social, economic, and even political barriers. When fans cheer for the same team, they set aside their individual differences and unite under a mutual sense of pride and collectivism.

For instance, in international sports conferences such as the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup, people from various backgrounds unite under a collective identity, cheering for their country’s victory. They come together not by race, religion, or politics, but by the pride in their athletes and representation. A famous example comes from the Ivory Coast in the late 2000s when the country’s star striker, Didier Drogba called for peace in the country. During the qualification rounds for the World Cup, Ivory Coast had been torn apart by a brutal civil war however, after successfully qualifying for their first ever World Cup, Drogba dropped to his knees on national television, begging factions and warmongers to set aside their arms to embrace this monumental achievement in the country’s history. Surprisingly, a ceasefire was announced a few weeks after Drogba’s televised plea. Looking past such examples, sports serve as a thread where they create spaces where people can feel a sense of unity and shared purpose. Whether in stadiums or in countless living rooms, sports foster an immense sense of belonging that transcends individuality. In these moments, whether it’s a family gathered in the living room, a crowd in a stadium, or parades on the streets, these shared experiences cultivate a spirit that is impossible to replicate.

Sports also serve as a platform for underrepresented communities to present themselves. When athletes from these marginalized backgrounds succeed, it also means a victory for the whole nation. This promotes social and cultural cohesion. For example, the success of female tennis player Serena Williams not only brought sporting glory to the US, but also increased representation for underrepresented minorities such as African Americans.

Sports aren’t just a form of entertainment or physical tournaments, but they are also active platforms that promote unity and national pride. By creating shared experiences, showcasing national identity, and unifying nations, sports foster a strong sense of togetherness. As countries globally face divisions and global challenges, sports remain as a powerful tool to entertain the masses and promote unity of nations.
