Culture and Leadership Matter

Sports have the power to inspire, unite communities, and elevate human performance. Behind every team, organization, and athlete, lies something more powerful than talent alone, leadership and organizational culture.

Cultures created by leaders influence how athletes develop, how teams perform, and how people experience their careers in sports. Culture shapes expectations, relationships, accountability, trust, and the levels of success for teams and athletes. It can inspire excellence, or quietly undermine it.

For too long, culture has been treated as an afterthought in sports. Winning often becomes the only metric that matters, and many times it comes with a cost to the team and athletes.

Leadership and culture impact everything within a sports organization. It influences organizational success, team and athlete performance, and the short- and long-term mental, physical, and emotional health of athletes. Recognizing the importance of these issues, Culture in Sports was created to lead a discussion about leadership and organizational culture across the sports industry.

Culture in Sports is on a mission to lead a discussion on how leadership and organizational culture impact organizational success, team and athlete performance, and the short- and long-term mental, physical, and emotional health of athletes. We aim to achieve this through our ‘Sports Leader of the Year’ program, annual Leadership Summit, monthly ‘Culture Roundtable’ webinars, podcasts, video shows, articles, curriculums, and courses. Join us as we strive to elevate the conversation around culture in sports.

Creating a Platform for Dialogue

Culture in Sports brings together leaders, scholars, practitioners, athletes, and professionals from across the sports ecosystem to explore how leadership and culture shape sports. We advance this conversation through initiatives including:

Sports Leader of the Year, recognizing individuals who exemplify leadership and positive culture in sports

Annual leadership summit, convening experts to discuss the future of leadership and culture in athletics

Culture Roundtable webinars, creating open dialogue around emerging issues in sports

Podcasts and video shows that examine leadership decisions and cultural dynamics in the sports world

Articles, curriculum, and educational courses designed to help leaders better understand how to build stronger organizations

Consulting services to assess organizations and provide gameplans to drive success

Through these efforts, Culture in Sports serves as a platform where ideas can be explored, experiences can be shared, and leadership practices can be examined.

A Conversation About the Future of Sports

As leadership and organizational culture in the sports industry continues to evolve, athletes, coaches, high performance staff, and support teams are speaking more openly about their experiences. Organizations are facing greater scrutiny and leadership decisions are increasingly recognized as having lasting consequences beyond the playing field. In this changing landscape, understanding true leadership and culture is no longer optional. It is essential.

Culture in Sports exists to help leaders and organizations better understand the impact from the culture they create. The future of sports will not be defined only by championships, it will also be defined by leadership and culture that shape the people who compete, lead, and work within sports.
