Written by The Los Angeles Rams were trying to offload their quarterback, Jared Goff, earlier this year. And when the opportunity arose, they made a trade. The trade looked like a great opportunity for both organizations and both teams seemed to be good fits for the newly traded quarterbacks. Even Matthew Stafford, who was being traded to the Los Angeles Rams was excited about it. However, the only person that was not aware of the trade was Jared Goff. When his coach called to tell him the news, he felt “blindsided” by the whole situation.
This coach, Sean McVay, has expressed that he wishes that he would have been better at communicating and handling the situation. He realizes that he is human and could have done better. Sean McVay coming to this realization, and his openness to all about his error, is something noteworthy to discuss. For one, he performed self-reflection. Coach McVay then understood his role in a poor decision. The decision to trade him was not necessarily in question, just his lack of communication and overall handling of the situation when it came to the outgoing quarterback, Jared Goff. McVay then openly took responsibility for his poor choice by voicing his role in the poor situation and pledged to be better.
All of Coach McVay’s actions were a result of himself seeing the situation for what it was, a poor one. He was not reflecting, digging down deep inside, or publicly stating his shortfall because of a big scandal, due to public pressure, or because the team owner or NFL was making him. McVay was very open with his shortfall and could have easily said nothing to himself or anyone else. I am not insinuating that Coach McVay deserves anything here, other than that he is a coach that reflected on his decisions and lack of judgement. But he was open about his mistake, poor judgement, lack of communication, self reflected, realized his errors, and shared that with others, so they can learn from him.
