Men in today’s sports are some of the highest paid people in the world. They get thousands and millions of dollars over the course of maybe 5-6 years depending on their contracts. Women in sports on the other hand get a fraction of what the men are making. They’re grateful just with a couple thousand and maybe get 2-3 million dollars if they’re lucky. There has been much talk about this wage gap for many years, and just recently, a change was made.
The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team broke all gender barriers by getting the equal pay they deserve. Women from all different sports have used their voices to make a change to the lack of money they are getting compared to the men. Well, this all changed in February 2022 for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team as they made one of the biggest steps in sports history, being paid just as equally as the men’s soccer team. With this being done, it is allowing women to be able to stand their ground in sports and voice their issues.
This is only the beginning of what women’s sports should be getting. Women work just as hard as the men, yet don’t get the same treatment. The women’s soccer team’s stand for equality will help further professional sports organizations see that women need to be respected, that these female athletes need their equal rights. The wage gap was drastically different between both the men and women’s salaries, especially with the bonuses they would receive if they won the world cup. The men would get around 4 million dollars more in bonuses than the women, yet they both had won the same championship.
Male professional athletes have also been a great backbone for equality. The U.S. Men’s Soccer Team voiced their opinions on this issue and provided more support for equal pay towards the women. This shows that men and women are the same at the end of the day, they’re athletes just wanting to be treated equally. Just one set of athletes have to fight more than the others even though they work just as hard. In the end, the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team did what people thought was never going to happen, they did what female athletes have dreamed of for years, they got equality.
