Coaches do make mistakes. Are these “mistakes” intentional or actual mistakes that a human being can make? Are coaches and other sports leaders willing to self reflect, identify toxic and abusive behavior, and take corrective action? Or will they double down on their behavior at the expense of others?

We, at Culture in Sports, recognize the importance of creating a positive culture in sports. We have developed a monthly series of Culture Roundtable webinars that generate discussions on difficult topics within all areas and levels of sports. The next webinar, in light of recent headlines related to abusive coaching practices and SafeSport investigations, is particularly timely. The topic of the webinar is how coaches can avoid toxic or abusive culture, recognize errors, and prevent issues that can lead to career-ending consequences.

This “Coaches Make Mistakes” webinar will emphasize the importance of creating a culture of respect and accountability within sports. Coaches and all sports must understand that the well-being of their athletes is more important than winning at all costs. Creating a safe and supportive environment for athletes is paramount to their success both on and off the field, pitch, pool, court, mat, or track. Setting clear expectations and boundaries is key to creating a positive culture. Coaches must establish a culture where athletes feel comfortable speaking up if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

The webinar will also highlight the need for coaches to recognize their own biases and limitations. Seeking out resources and support when needed can help coaches become more knowledgeable on topics such as diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as mental health and wellness. Coaches must be willing to take responsibility for their mistakes and make changes to prevent similar issues from arising in the future.

Another important aspect of the webinar is recognizing and addressing errors, both forced and unforced. Coaches must understand that ignoring or downplaying mistakes and errors can put themselves and their athletes at risk of harm. Coaches must be willing to self reflect, identify toxic behavior, and take corrective action to prevent harm and ensure that their athletes are protected.

This webinar will also address the signs of toxic or abusive culture. Coaches must be aware of the power dynamics at play in their relationships with athletes and be vigilant for signs of harassment, bullying, or other forms of abuse. Coaches must be willing to report concerns to the appropriate authorities and take appropriate action to protect their athletes.

Culture in Sports’ monthly Culture Roundtable webinars are a valuable resource for coaches who are committed to creating a positive and safe culture in sports. By sharing best practices, discussing challenges, and supporting one another, coaches can help ensure that athletes are able to thrive and achieve their full potential in a safe and respectful environment. The upcoming webinar is particularly timely and is a must-attend for coaches who want to prevent toxic or abusive culture and ensure the safety of their athletes.
