Football in these two countries has always been very different. In the UK, football is the most popular sport by a long way in comparison to any other whereas in the US where it is considered as soccer, it is only the fifth most popular sport in the country.
This can be due to many different reasons from the fact that in America heavy contact sports like football are preferred or because of the culture of other sports in the country where draws aren’t seen, and it is preferred that there is an outright winner of every game which is why in football in the US and basketball the games will go to overtime if there is a draw at the end of the regular time period. In comparison in soccer, there is only extra time and penalties if needed should the game be in a knockout tournament such as the World Cup. If it is a league game, at the end of the 90 minutes the game will end, and each team will get a point which isn’t the normality for other sports in America.
Comparing this to the UK culture it is very different as it isn’t a problem to have draws as that is the case in other sports that are played in the UK such as rugby. In England football is seen as a religion and has a similar if not higher level of popularity then American football in the US. This is because football is at the heart of British culture due to it being a sport that everyone can play and anywhere no matter how much or little equipment you have. This is why when looking at the England team, a lot of the players are from less privileged backgrounds as they don’t have the money to afford the equipment required for other sports that are played in the UK such as tennis.
In the UK is very different to the US when looking at fan culture as well especially with away fans. This is because it is seen much more in British culture to be chanting and singing throughout matches in support of their teams. It is also due to the size difference of the two nations, with US soccer the fans would have to travel so far to see their team play whereas in the UK, the furthest travel would be a few hundred miles and also many more away tickets are sold in the UK in comparison to the US.
This is because the culture in the UK is different and away fans are seen as the more faithful supporters of their club.
