Let’s talk leadership. When you think of the leaders in your life, who comes to mind? What attributes do they have? Do you count on them? Will you take their advice? Can you trust them with your success? Why do you want them to lead you?
Every sports team is comprised of various role players. Whether it be a coach, captain, substitute, assistant, or teammate, each plays a role in creating success or failure. I’d argue that the stronger the leadership, the better the success.
So what does leadership in sport look like?
Leadership is taking ownership of one’s actions.
It’s being willing to step up in critical situations and make decisions.
It’s keeping teammates mission-focused.
It involves prioritizing teammates’ success over your own at times.
Leadership is creating order in the midst of chaos.
Leadership is caring about the person, not just the player.
It’s knowing athletes are more than their on-field success.
It’s doing the hard thing because it’s the right thing.
It’s demonstrating work ethic.
It’s doing, not just saying.
It’s finding & fostering the strengths of others.
Leaders you can trust.
Leaders go first.
Leaders don’t back down.
Leaders want the success of others.
Leaders make sacrifices.
Leaders lead because they want to make a difference.
Leaders lead because they know their team is stronger because of them.
Leaders lead because leading leads to learning, learning leads to growth, growth leads to change, & change leads to impact.
