Mercedes F1 team are one of the biggest teams and most successful teams winning seven constructor’s
championships in a row and have dominated the sport in the last decade. In 2010, the company
bought the Brawn GP team, rebranding it as Mercedes and since then have been at the pinnacle of
the sport. However, many people think this due to them having some of the best drivers in recent
years such as Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Valtteri Bottas or having the best engine. These are
all contributing factors to the organisation’s success in F1 but a lot of it comes down to the
teamwork and the culture with Mercedes and how they run their organisation.
The team has It directly employs 1,000 people at its base in Brackley, with 700 more working in its
Brixworth factory producing power units for Mercedes and Williams. The materials that develop the
car is developed by a small team of around 40 people at Petronas’ research wing in Italy and
Malaysia. In such a demanding sport that continues all year-round Mercedes teamwork is crucial to
their success and this has been an integral part of the team achieving much success and being the
team, everyone looks up to in F1. However, the difficulty lies in making the best part of 2,000 people
work together properly some in the UK, some in Italy, some further afield, all working to produce the
same two cars and get the best performance possible. This is what makes Mercedes stand out as
they achieve the best results in such a demanding environment and have a successful organisation
structure within their team. The way Mercedes run their team in an efficient way and technical
director “Pointing a finger at people and saying they’re to blame for something is verboten in our
world”. This just shows how much they are a unit and that they’re all working towards the same
goals and that no pointing fingers which is something embedded in the organisation’s culture.
With such a culture in place, it’s little wonder why the Silver Arrows have been so successful for such
a long period of time in F1.
