Recently someone told me they stopped watching the NFL because they were tired of athletes speaking about their causes, and they just needed to “shut up and play.” To which I ask Why? What makes athletes less qualified to speak about social justice than you or I? Because they are rich athletes? Maybe now, but they haven’t always been.
As humans we all have different experiences that shape who we are as adults. 70% of NFL athletes are black and 75% of NBA athletes are black, meaning they are more likely to have experienced racism than I. Not to mention, some of our favorite players are our favorites because they have defeated the odds; a classic rags to riches story. We love them. We love them because they have experienced things many of us can’t even imagine experiencing – and yet, they’ve made it.
Also, major league sports organizations have community outreach programs and foundations. These programs provide unique opportunities for athletes to get involved in major areas of need within the community their team represents. In turn creates another opportunity for athletes to gain experience and knowledge of the struggles people face. Many athletes then become mouthpieces for them and their struggles.
To my friend, that is boycotting the NFL because sports has become too political, it has always been political, just now – the athletes get to speak their mind. Maybe it is time that we shut up and listen.
