Former New York Mets Manager Mickey Callaway has been accused by five different women of “incessant, inappropriate sexual advances toward women in sports media.” These women needed to interact with Callaway to do their jobs. https://sports.yahoo.com/former-mets-manager-mickey-callaway-accused-of-unrelenting-lewd-behavior-toward-women-in-media-020746255.html
This is the third significant sexual harassment or discrimination allegation against a Mets employee or owner since 2014. It is obvious the franchise, at least under its past ownership, has been blind to both the issues of appropriate treatment of women in the workplace and ignored the complaints of working women, which is beyond sad.
I’ve loved the Mets since I was 5 years old, which coincides with their improbable World Series title in 1969. Working in and around other sports, most of my adult life the Mets have been the team that is my refuge, an escape from work. But can and should a fan speak out and demand more of his favorite team? The answer is absolutely! We must ask and demand that our favorite teams reflect our best values. Even though I’ve been a Mets fan since I was 5, I am the son of a working mother and know that every woman deserves fair and decent treatment in the workplace and value that far more. I hope everyone does and that my favorite team gets the message and works to never face a similar allegation again.
