Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful team interactions and a prerequisite for high
performance. Building a productive communication network within a team requires understanding,
trust, and the conscious application of communication best practices.

Two-Way Street

Communication is a two-way process and it not only involves how you send messages, but also how you
listen and respond (Dwyer, 2020). While transmitting information clearly is crucial, equally important is
the ability to listen actively and respond empathetically. Active listening fosters understanding and trust
within the team, essential ingredients for team cohesiveness and productivity.

Clarity

Effective communication is characterized by clarity. Each team member must strive to be clear, concise,
and articulate in their interactions. Ambiguity can lead to misunderstandings and confusion, along with
lowering the trust and confidence of athletes and the team. Therefore, each message should be
articulated in a manner that ensures alignment between the sender’s intent and the receiver’s
understanding.

Empathy

Understanding and respecting each other’s perspectives, emotions, and experiences is crucial in team
communication. Empathetic communication strengthens interpersonal bonds, enhances mutual respect,
and contributes to better team performance.

Non-verbal Communication

Often overlooked, non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, gestures, and body language play a
significant role in interpersonal communication. Non-verbal cues can provide incredible information that
verbal communication may miss (Pease & Pease, 2017). Therefore, being aware of and responsive to
these cues can help in deciphering unexpressed feelings and subtleties, leading to a richer, more
nuanced understanding of team dynamics.

Effective team communication is a skill that needs conscious cultivation. It requires clarity, empathy,
active listening, and an understanding of non-verbal cues. When teams communicate effectively, they set
the stage for greater collaboration, higher engagement, and improved performance.
